robert z'dar's jaw is doing more acting than half the cast and i mean that as the highest compliment. the bit where laurene landon is cuffed to a dead cop and has to drag him around new york is the kind of nasty setpiece people pretend only the cool slashers get. larry cohen wrote this, by the way, it's smarter than it looks. yes, the second one is the better entry, fight me, it goes bigger and meaner and lets z'dar cook. but you don't get there without part one. tom atkins grumbling through 1988 grime, bruce campbell underused but game. an overlooked cornerstone, slept on because people only watched the original once.
