everyone warned me this was the weak link of the m3gan stuff and i watched it on hulu in my pajamas fully expecting to half-pay attention and then lily sullivan does that lovefool karaoke thing and i had to sit up. she is doing SO much, this weird husky stiff thing where she's figuring out how to be a person in real time, dancing in the rain, wandering a farmers market like she just got born. i get the companion comparisons and sure it doesn't reinvent anything but i don't care, i was locked in. paused it twice just to text my friend about her. i expected disposable and got a little obsessed instead

okay so everyone wanted this to be M3GAN doing a little dance and instead kate dolan made a sad quiet movie about a man who cannot let go and honestly? i was into it. lily sullivan is doing SO much with basically her whole body held perfectly still, that flat programmed sweetness that keeps almost cracking, i couldn't look away. yeah the middle stretch drags and david rysdahl mopes around the house for a while but the mopey lonely widower energy is kind of the point, this is grief cosplaying as an erotic thriller and i respect the audacity. is it as fun as a killer doll? no. did i sit there getting genuinely uneasy watching a machine learn what it means to want something. also yes. everyone comparing it to companion can go outside, this one wants to make you sad first and i think that's cunty of it

lily sullivan doing that stiff little android head tilt is the only thing keeping me awake here and honestly she deserved a better movie built around her. i went in wanting the trashy horny R-rated m3gan and instead got something that keeps flinching away from its own premise every time it should go feral. the karaoke bit rules, the bone-snapping stuff is genuinely nasty when it shows up, but so much of this is just watching a sad man mope around a house in ireland pretending to be america. i'm a sucker for a killer robot and even i kept checking how long was left. give me the campy version universal, cowards.
