a long hold on her face before she lifts the chisel. it sits there until you have to look at what she's about to choose. blichfeldt has the patience to let it set in slowly. it's a period piece that understands the worst horror is the waiting room, the hours of being measured and found wanting. the gore is louder than i usually want and the finale tips into a register that doesn't trust the quiet it earned earlier. but lea myren carries the stillness. she lets us watch a girl decide, frame by frame, to disappear into a shape. the slipper was never the point. the wanting was.
