Hannibal Rising
2007 · 121 min · Crime · Thriller · Horror
It started with revenge.
The story of the early, murderous roots of the cannibalistic killer, Hannibal Lecter – from his hard-scrabble Lithuanian childhood, where he witnesses the repulsive lengths to which hungry soldiers will go to satiate themselves, through his sojourn in France, where as a medical student he hones his appetite for the kill.

snowed-in lithuania, hungry soldiers, a frozen lodge, the worst thing happening just off-frame. that opening stretch lets you sit in it. then someone handed the edit to a man terrified of going quiet. ulliel is genuinely good, all that watchful stillness under the cheekbones, and the movie keeps cutting away before a single moment can settle. why explain the boy until nothing liminal is left, just a checklist of wounds? a film about an appetite that never once lets the room go still long enough to feel hungry.
