a body pops like a wet bag of meat in the first cycle and i sat up straight. sticky, real, dripping off the set the way it should, somebody in this crew knows latex. the wendigo build is the high point, the costume degrading across the loops instead of a clean swap. thirteen deaths means thirteen swings at a kill and most of them land, no implied nonsense, they show you the meat. the premise runs thin by the back half, sure, but they never reach for the computer to cover it. the psycho's mask work and the squib gags are craft. a whole valley of practical creatures and slimy grime you can almost smell. more of this, please.

a bear trap closes on clover's leg and the film finally goes quiet for a second. that second is the only still minute in the whole thing. then it remembers it has twelve more deaths to get through and sprints off again. groundhog day for people who can't bear to sit in one room. the dread underneath is genuinely good though. melanie as the wendigo, recognizable and not, is the one image that stayed with me. i wanted the valley to be allowed to be a place and not a delivery system for the next costume. a witch, a masked man, a creature, none given room to breathe. liminal in premise, restless in practice.
