just the drip from the ceiling and i was already gone. nakata doesn't scare you with a hit, he scares you with a sound that never stops. the whole film is water finding its way down through concrete and you can't unhear it. the long black hair coming out of the tap, soft, no music, my whole body went cold. a sad mother, a drowned girl who just wants someone to stay, and an elevator full of black water. it earns the flood. scarier than ringu and lonelier too. analog ache in a digital year.

a stain on the ceiling, spreading like rot in a wet autumn. that's the whole thing for me. no fields, no reaping, just a damp tower block and a mother who gives herself over so a drowned girl will be still. and you know what? the water gets what it was owed. it always does. ikuko grows up fine. someone had to pay the rent on that grief, and yoshimi paid it. this isn't a city film the way i usually flinch at one. the building is the landscape. the leak is the season. the quietest dread i've felt in a while, and nobody whistled past the well. the red bag coming back no matter how far she throws it. i felt that one deep down.
