cushing crosses two candlesticks and the count burns away in a shaft of stolen daylight, and i have never recovered. this is the moment the modern vampire was born. Lee says almost nothing and rules the entire picture on bearing alone, red-eyed, animal, courtly. Fisher paints in technicolor blood and candle-glow, Bernard's score growling underneath like something pacing in the cellar, that staircase ascending into ruin. a film that studies the old form and then bares its fangs anyway. magnificent.
