that throat rattle is the whole movie's heartbeat and it lives in my spine now. the scariest thing here isn't a face, it's a SOUND, a wet broken clicking that arrives before kayako does so you already know. analog dread, no 4k needed. the vignette structure breaks it up a little, every title card cuts the tension just as it builds. but the silences. god the silences. toshio's little cat meow in an empty room. the bedsheet crawl where she just comes in under the covers with you, like fuck that. i would not have looked up into that attic, but rip to rika, braver than me and it got her anyway.
