that cutaway from oliver and the melon, holding on the sound alone. nerve, to look away like that. hawkins lets it show slowly, a foster mother's warmth turning liminal over long quiet minutes. it earns its grief before it earns its dread. the body horror is louder than i'd choose and it spends some of the silence it built so carefully. but the cruelty here is the small kind, the wet-yourself trick, the whispered lie in the dark, and that lingers longer than any wound.

a kid chews a kitchen knife. lips and gums splitting on the blade, teeth dropping out, and they aimed the lens right at it without flinching. neither could i. all prosthetics and squibs, somebody sculpted every wound by hand. jonah wren phillips eating strips off his own arm, going through glass, opening his palms. it drags a bit in the middle while everyone grieves at each other, but i'll forgive plenty for a melon-on-a-knife gag that lands like that. sally hawkins is genuinely frightening, which i did not see coming.
