bare white plaster on the convent walls, and then Winnicka's Mother Joan arches backward and the whole frame goes to ruin. Wojcik lights faces the way Whale lit his monsters, every cheekbone a small architecture of dread. but it is the restraint that undoes me: the demons are eight repressions wearing one body, love forbidden until it can only speak in convulsions. Father Suryn praying himself into damnation, a soul going dark with no spectacle at all. Cannes knew. i would have given it more than they did. the burned priest we never see haunts harder than any monster could.
