no soil here, no sky, no season. just carpet and that buzzing daylight that never sets, which is its own kind of horror to me. that's what got under my skin. nothing grows in the backrooms. a place with no harvest, no turning of the year, a yellow noon that holds forever. you can't make an offering to a corridor. clark keeps thinking the rooms are a refuge and the rooms keep being a trap, and the film is patient enough to let him learn it slow. the kat and bobby thread frays a little. but reinsve alone in the false room at the end stayed with me. some places were never meant to be entered, and the village would've known to leave that basement alone.

behind the doorway in that furniture-showroom basement: nothing that wants you, nothing that even notices you. that's the good part. the complex doesn't hate clark. it doesn't know he exists. ejiofor spends the film begging a space the size of the void itself for an exit, and the space just keeps being a space. ligotti would have approved of how little comfort is on the table. people are angry the ending denies them. obviously it does. an exit would be a lie about where we actually live. the wrongness is that there's no door, only more room, and a copy of you in a costume coming down the hall.

the fluorescents hum and never stop. that wet electric drone under everything is the whole film for me. parsons came off youtube and somehow understands that a corridor you cannot leave is scarier than anything waiting at the end of it. he just lets the yellow rooms go on. and on. closest thing to actual liminal dread anyone's put on a screen in a while, suffocating instead of loud. it loses some of that nerve in the back half when it starts wanting to mean things. the captain clark business is a lot. i wanted it to keep trusting the quiet. still, minutes of it. reinsve sitting alone in that badly copied office is the image i can't put down.
