When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

Super original film. I loved this movie. Perhaps one of my favorites this year.

a cul-de-sac at the dead hour, every porch light on, seventeen small shapes pouring out of their houses toward one address. the village isn't a village here. it's a school district. the old hunger wears a cardigan now and keeps a spare room. people will call gladys a monster. i'm not so sure. she took what she needed the way reapings always do, quietly, from the children, while the parents slept. archer following the teacher through his own grief is just a man who refused to read the rules nailed to the gate. daylight makes it worse. the cul-de-sac looks so ordinary. that's the trick the good ones know.

all of them sprinting into the dark at once, arms pinned back behind them. i didn't need a line of dialogue after that and the film knew it. this isn't the patient thing i usually keep for winter. it's loud, it jumps between people, it overexplains. but cregger's trick is to bury the worst image early and let it fester in you for two hours. the run never stops being wrong. amy madigan in that spare room is the rare thing the camera doesn't have to push. she just sits there being incorrect and the air goes cold. justine drinking alone while the town turns on her, that's what i came for. the structure is a card trick. i clocked it. didn't care, because it earned the gasp.
