r lee ermey turns a fake sheriff into the scariest hewitt in the whole family tree, and hoyt is the reason this prequel earns its spot. people dunk on it for being grim, but that's the point, it's the origin of how the family got this way and it commits. the diner where hoyt eats off the floor, leatherface obediently sawing the second leg, this is the connective tissue everyone skips. it's the nastiest entry, and that's a feature, not a bug. watch it back to back with the 2003 and tell me leatherface doesn't hit harder. a brutal origin story horror people wrote off way too fast.

the saw nicks monty's good leg and hoyt just goes "well now we gotta even em up." lol. that's the whole movie. mean little thing, and the blood is built for real. eric strapped to the table, leatherface tearing through him while chrissie hides underneath and he flicks the spray down at her, that's a real squib day on set, you can feel the latex. holden split in half, the first mask peeled off a fresh face. story's thin, just a long bad day in a slaughterhouse. but ermey's sheriff is having the time of his life and the kills land. came for the saw, left satisfied.
