a man in a black car parks in a maine town right before the frost and starts handing out everyone's deepest want. you already know how this ends. von sydow is the whole devil. he doesn't even have to try, he just keeps calling poor buster 'buster' until the man straps a bomb to himself. that's the old trade dressed up in a shop window. you give the town what it craves and it tears itself apart by autumn, neighbor against neighbor, no monster required. the town was never the problem. greed was always going to come collecting, gaunt just opened a register for it. some prices get paid no matter what. wish it spent less time being grim and more time outdoors. but the bargain is real and the ending burns clean.
