newsreel grain on the farmhouse windows, and that alone tells you what kind of picture this is. Romero shot the dark like he owed it money, and the high-contrast frame does what no buckets of color ever could. Duane Jones boards up that house with a gravity that stops your breath, and the still-photo coda of his body on the pyre is the cruelest light in all of american horror. they came to get barbra and they got everyone. monochrome is a feature. i have notes for nobody.
