maya walks off holding the mask, and that final shot is the one true second in ninety minutes. there's a real idea buried in the branding: you survive the faceless thing and it simply turns you into itself. no motive, no meaning, just substitution. but the movie can't bear its own emptiness, so it crams every silence with exposition, as if the unknowable owed us a memo. cioran said the void can be furnished. they furnished it badly. petsch keeps reaching for a person the script won't grant her. the situation is bleak. the film only accidentally.

that pin-up girl mask is a 1920s vaudeville dancer and it's the only thing in here that actually works on me. the stillness is gone. every time it should drop to a low hush they cut to a flashback and explain it instead. you can't be scared of a thing someone keeps narrating. scarecrow strokes the masked face and for one frame it goes patient and analog and then a string swell ruins it. madelaine petsch deserved a film that trusted the silence. american slashers always feel like a sport to me anyway, and this one keeps showing me the scoreboard.
