adam scott being a genuinely miserable prick in this and i could not look away, the man committed to being the worst guy in the room and it rules. there's a bell in here that damian mccarthy has somehow turned into the scariest sound i've heard all year, every time it hit i felt it in my teeth. the dumbwaiter bit had me physically sinking into my seat like i could make myself smaller too. do i think it juggles maybe one too many haunted threads by the end? yeah a little, the witch and the missing woman never quite hold hands the way i wanted. but i was scared in a bright afternoon screening which almost never happens to me so whatever he's doing is working

the bodega scene where ghostface just keeps shooting the shotgun at the guy is the most unhinged this franchise has ever been and i was THRIVING. like new york gave him a gun and a knife and zero chill. sam being the closest thing we've had to a sidney-shaped final girl in years and the movie keeps poking at whether she's the hero or the next loomis, which is honestly the only interesting thing left to do with this slot. do i miss neve. constantly. did the ladder-over-the-alley sequence make me forget about it for nine straight minutes. yes. third act fully chickens out and hugs everyone instead of committing but the gooding twin gets stabbed and lives so i'll allow it

the guy whose jaw gets left hanging by like three threads of tissue and then just DECIDES to keep living??? sir lie down. i thought about that prosthetic flapping for the rest of the runtime. anyway seann william scott playing it dead straight broke my brain a little, stifler proposing in the woods and meaning it. shot on grimy 16mm so you can practically smell the heat coming off it, and then they go and ruin it with a drone shot like ma'am that camera did not exist in 1974. dolly herself (max the impaler, towering mannequin nightmare) is a genuinely great new shape, i just wish i cared about anyone the way i was supposed to. macy makes the dumbest decisions in the tristate area and i would simply have walked back to the car the second i saw dolls nailed to trees. still. nasty in the way i wanted

so i did the thing where i watched this with my good headphones on at midnight which in hindsight was a war crime against myself. for like 60 minutes i was lowkey checking my watch because it really is the same five beats on a loop, evy doubts the tape, evy listens again, evy looks scared, repeat. and then the LAST stretch happens and the pipe thing gets explained and i actually said no out loud to an empty room. nina kiri carrying a whole movie with basically just her face and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones is genuinely nuts. not the second coming the marketing promised but the ending earned my whole body going cold

marion crane dies at minute 47 and takes the entire grammar of survivorship with her. this is the ur-text. before any rules existed, somebody had to break the one everyone assumed was safe: the protagonist lives. trace it all back to this motel, the isolated victim, the punished transgression, the killer's domineering parent, every bit of it canon now because hitchcock did it first. marion's survival grade: catastrophic, she pulls over to sleep instead of crossing a state line. but lila walking up to that house is the real final girl audition, flashlight forward, no scream. half a century of slashers are footnotes to her.

jill roberts didn't want to survive the killer. she wanted to be the final girl, and that's the most useful thing this franchise has ever said about my field. the whole movie is survivorship as a brand. sidney earned the title in blood; jill wants it with none of the trauma, manufactured for the cameras, and craven knows the difference is everything. kirby's horror-trivia standoff is the rules made literal, she answers correctly and still dies, the cruelest twist in the run. knowing the field doesn't save you. living it does. the triple-fakeout open isn't a gimmick, it makes you grade which death is 'real' before you've met anyone. rip rachel, complained the franchise couldn't surprise you, got knifed for it. lesson noted.

the only one who read the situation right is the crew member who goes full jack torrance: in a found-footage house everybody dies, so you may as well be the killer. the practical effects are genuinely brutal, and amy and tony have the only real survival instincts on screen. but a haunted house gives me nothing to grade. nobody here has a strategy because the camera, not the character, is the protagonist, and that footage exists for no reason a final girl would ever accept. solid kills. cold.

forty years of boarding up windows and a panic room dug into the basement. laurie strode stopped being prey and rewrote the whole thing from underneath. survival: A. she does what no final girl before her was allowed to, she sets the trap and pulls the levers, becomes the architect of the house instead of the thing hiding in its closet. then three generations of strode women do the cornering. the closet finally belongs to them. the film is rougher than her strategy. the babysitter beat, vicky and the closet and julian upstairs, is the only kill with real 1978 patience. the rest is mostly bodies, roughly a dozen. jamie lee curtis knows this material better than the script does. not the original, doesn't pretend to be. but it breaks the right rule.
