that flaming axe fight made me feel things i haven't felt since i was rigging blood squibs for a living. you can SEE the trick on half these kills and that's the whole pleasure, somebody clearly loved their latex more than they loved the script. zazie beetz throwing herself into every limb that goes flying is the only reason this thing has a pulse, she's doing real choreography while the plot just kinda loops on itself like it forgot what floor it was on. they tell you every floor is a different vice and then show you basically none of them, which is the kind of crime i can't fully forgive. but a sentient eyeball named sharon? sold. heather graham gonzo as hell. saw it with my buddy who hates horror and even he was howling so make of that what you will

a full body suit with not one speck of cgi anywhere near it and you wanna know something? i teared up a little. they BUILT this thing, it has weight, when it crashes a body in half you feel the latex and the karo syrup doing honest work. that grisly intestine bit had me grinning like an idiot in a near empty amc. is the script clunky? oh absolutely, half these characters sit in the dark talking and i forgot their names while they were still alive, and the ending reaches for something it never earns. but i don't care. i came for a man in a suit doing horrible things to people in the snow and i got exactly that. they spent the money where it matters. rip to everyone in this movie, the elements were never the problem

a cross-section dummy bitten in half, intestines and all, built so you read the empty space where a person used to be. that's a savini move and somebody on this crew knows it. wirkola doesn't wait around, a tanker of meat paste cracks open, chums the flooded street, and the feeding starts. real blood in murky water is hard to fake and they didn't fake the part that counts. the basement chase with the great white actually got me, real weight to the thing. movie can't decide if it's a serious eco picture or a creature feature and it drags whenever it tries to be the first one. but when a fin comes through a porch, the practical holds. give me LSD cow next. i mean it.

a head goes into the banister and they shove the dresser into it. that's the whole reason this thing exists and it works. de rossi built that, real squibs, blood with weight to it because they brought in a coroner to get the spray right and it shows. the concrete saw chase is the real deal too, arterial work, throat work, an axe that lands like it means it. this is what they had to trim from an nc-17 and you can feel the cuts they DID leave in. the twist is dumb and the script eats itself by the end, won't argue. but i'm here for the craft and the craft is real. crank it loud.
